In the video I watched, Ashley Ludman from Seaside Yoga explains the similarities and differences seen in yoga and pilates. Pilates is a standard exercise program that focuses on core control and strengthening the body. Yoga focuses on exercise as well as spiritual meditation. Yoga and pilates are similar based on the type of breathing, the mindfulness and the mind and body connection needed to perform these exercises. "Yoga is not a religion, but it helps you connect to a deeper aspect of yourself"(Ludman). It's not just an exercise, it focuses on how you relate to yourself and your surroundings. Pilates strictly focuses on strengthening the body. The difference between yoga and pilates is the intention each exercise has.
Personally, I think I would enjoy pilates over yoga. If a person is just trying to strengthen their body, I would recommend pilates to them. If a person wanted to be more relaxed while exercising, I would recommend yoga. I think that pilates brings a lot of benefits to the body because it is a straightforward form of exercise. Yoga however, takes your body into a deeper consciousness of your mind, body, and spirit, and how it relates to everything else. I think that yoga is more beneficial on helping the body relax and for meditation.
